
Mr. Vikas Swarup is a member of the Indian Foreign Service which he joined in 1986. During his career, Mr. Swarup has served in diverse missions such as Ankara, Washington DC, Addis Ababa, London and Pretoria. Since August 2009, he has been serving as Consul General of India in Osaka-Kobe.
During his stints in New Delhi, Mr. Swarup has served on the desks looking after Southern Africa, United States, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan. He also served as Director in the office of the Minister of External Affairs.
Besides being a diplomat, Mr. Swarup is also an author. He has written two books, Q&A, which was filmed as ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and won eight Oscars including best picture and Six Suspects. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages including Japanese.
Mr. Swarup is a graduate from the University of Allahabad. He has been conferred a degree of Doctor of Literature & Philosophy (honoris causa) by the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Mr. Swarup is married to Aparna, an artist who has held exhibitions in India and abroad. They have two sons.
Apart from reading, Mr. Swarup enjoys listening to music and playing cricket, tennis and table tennis.
